Paradise Gouramis are a group of colorful and hardy labyrinth fish (species under the genus Macropodus) that are admired for their vibrant colors and engaging behavior. The Flame Paradise, Red Paradise, and Ice Blue Paradise Gouramis are popular variants of the Paradise Fish (Macropodus opercularis) and other closely related species.

General Characteristics

  1. Family: Osphronemidae (the same family as bettas and other gouramis).
  2. Size: Grows up to 3–4 inches (7.5–10 cm).
  3. Body Shape: Slender, elongated body with flowing fins, often adorned with bold stripes and iridescent hues.
  4. Color Varieties:
    • Flame Paradise: Vibrant orange-red with subtle iridescent highlights.
    • Red Paradise: Deep red with brighter accents.
    • Ice Blue Paradise: Light blue or icy white body with red fins or stripes.
  5. Behavior:
    • Semi-aggressive, particularly males during breeding or in confined spaces.
    • Active swimmers that often display territorial or “flaring” behavior.
  6. Lifespan: Typically 6–8 years in well-maintained aquariums.

Care Requirements

  1. Tank Size:
    • Minimum: 20 gallons for a single fish or pair.
    • Larger tanks (30+ gallons) recommended for communities.
  2. Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F).
    • pH: 6.0–8.0 (wide tolerance).
    • Hardness: 5–25 dGH.
    • These fish are hardy and can adapt to varying conditions but prefer clean, slightly soft water.
  3. Tank Setup:
    • Substrate: Sand or gravel.
    • Plants: Dense planting with species like Java fern, Anubias, and floating plants to provide cover and break sightlines.
    • Hiding Spots: Add caves, driftwood, or decorations for territories.
    • Filtration: Gentle filtration is essential to avoid stressing them, as they are native to slow-moving or stagnant waters.
  4. Diet:
    • Omnivorous and thrives on a varied diet:
      • High-quality pellets or flakes.
      • Live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and mosquito larvae.
      • Vegetable matter like spinach or spirulina-based foods.

Behavior and Tankmates

  1. Temperament:
    • Males are territorial, especially during breeding or in smaller tanks.
    • Females are generally less aggressive.
  2. Tankmates:
    • Suitable: Peaceful or semi-aggressive fish like loaches, larger tetras, or danios.
    • Avoid: Other labyrinth fish (bettas, gouramis) or slow-moving, fin-nipping species.

Breeding

  1. Bubble Nest Builders:
    • Males build bubble nests on the surface, often under floating plants.
    • Breeding can be triggered by slightly warmer temperatures and abundant live food.
  2. Courtship:
    • Males flare fins and display vibrant colors to attract females.
    • After spawning, the male guards the nest and cares for the eggs until they hatch (1–3 days).
  3. Fry Care:
    • Provide infusoria or liquid fry food initially, transitioning to baby brine shrimp.

Unique Features

  • Labyrinth Organ: Allows them to breathe atmospheric air, making them adaptable to low-oxygen environments.
  • Hardiness: One of the most durable aquarium fish, tolerating a broad range of water conditions.
