Plant Overview
👉 Staurogyne repens (‘Brown’ is a variant/strain of this plant)
- Type: Foreground / carpeting plant
- Growth: Low, bushy, spreads sideways
- Height: ~5–10 cm
- Difficulty: Easy to medium (good for low-tech tanks)
👉 The “brown” version often develops a slight bronze/brown tint under good lighting
Planting 20 Stems (Important)
For a proper carpet:
- Split stems into smaller portions
- Don’t plant all 20 as bunches
- Break into 40–60 small pieces (2–3 leaves each)
- Spacing
- Plant each piece 2–3 cm apart
- Use tweezers for deep planting
- Depth
- Bury stem slightly but leave leaves above substrate
👉 This helps faster horizontal spread
💡 Low-Tech Requirements
Lighting
- Medium light (very important for carpeting)
- ~6–8 hours daily
👉 Too low light = tall, leggy growth (no carpet)
CO₂
- ❌ Not required
- ✔ Will grow without CO₂
- ✔ But grows faster and denser if CO₂ is added
Substrate
- Best: Nutrient-rich aqua soil
- Also works with:
- Sand + root tabs
- Gravel + root tabs
Fertilization
- Root tabs recommended
- Occasional liquid fertilizer helps color and growth
Growth & Carpet Formation
- Starts spreading in 2–3 weeks
- Full carpet: 6–10 weeks (low tech)
👉 Trim regularly to encourage sideways growth
Maintenance Tips
- Trim tops when plant gets tall → forces horizontal spread
- Replant cuttings to fill gaps
- Keep algae under control early stage
Common Mistakes
❌ Planting big bunches → slow spread
❌ Very low light → no carpeting
❌ No nutrients → yellowing/melting
❌ Disturbing substrate too often
Why it’s great
✔ One of the best low-tech carpeting plants
✔ Hardy and adaptable
✔ Unique green to brown tone
✔ Easier than Monte Carlo or HC Cuba
