Description

Hygrophila difformis from Asia is beautiful and undemanding stem plant.

Stems becomes 20-30 cm tall and 6-12 cm wide. A plant for beginners, which will help create balance in the aquarium from the start. Its rapid growth helps prevent algae because the plant absorbs a great number of nutrients from the water. The shortage of micronutrients leads to pale leaves, which may be an indication that the aquarium needs fertilizer.

In large aquariums its lobed leaves can create a distinctive group.

This unusually shaped aquarium plant does well in bright light and looks best when kept in well-spaced groups of four or five stems. The leaf shape is dictated by temperature; at lower temperatures, the leaves are thicker and smaller at higher temperatures they are large and more divided. The leaves are large up to in (10cm) long – so adequate space is a must. If the plants receive too little light, the lower leaves may drop off and the spacing between the leaves increases.

How to grow?

A bundle of stems or young plants gathered in an anchor. Remove the anchor and split into separate plants. Regarding stem plants, remove the leaves from the lowest 5 cm (2“). Remove any damaged leaves. Plant the individual plants with some distance into the bottom substrate. Roots will develop soon and the plant start growing.

The following are their 3 most basic needs:

They need primary factors such as light, carbon dioxide, and essential nutrients.

They will do well with subdued fluorescent or incandescent lights.

Co2-wise, if your aquarium has enough fish, they usually generate sufficient Co2 for the plant, which means it rarely needs any additional carbon dioxide booster.

Also remember

Hygrophila Difformis is friendly and is compatible with most types of fish, but it’s best to keep them with smaller fish.

The larger fish could damage the thin leaves of the plant. They do well with smaller non-cichlid fish and should never live with goldfish.

Supplements

Although unnecessary, Hygrophila Difformis could benefit from Co2 injections and liquid water fertilizers especially the ones that contain Iron.
