Description
size: 1.5-2 cm
The Strawberry Rasbora (Boraras naevus), also known as the Red Dwarf Rasbora, is a tiny, colorful, and peaceful freshwater fish that is popular among aquarium enthusiasts, particularly for nano or heavily planted tanks. Its name comes from the attractive red-pink hue of its body, which resembles a strawberry-like coloration.
Characteristics:
- Size: This species is quite small, growing to a maximum length of around 0.6 to 0.8 inches (1.5 to 2 cm), making it ideal for nano aquariums.
- Coloration: It features a delicate pinkish-red body with a dark, round, or oval spot near the tail. Some individuals may also have a second, smaller dark spot closer to the head.
- Lifespan: They live for approximately 3 to 5 years under optimal care.
Behavior:
- Schooling Fish: Strawberry Rasboras are social and do best in groups of at least 6-10 fish. They tend to be more active and confident when kept in schools, displaying their natural behaviors.
- Temperament: They are peaceful and ideal for community tanks, especially with other similarly sized, non-aggressive species.
Care Requirements:
- Tank Size: A 5 to 10-gallon tank is suitable for a small school of Strawberry Rasboras. While they are tiny, they still need room to swim comfortably.
- Water Conditions:
- Temperature: 68-82°F (20-28°C)
- pH: 4.0-7.0 (They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water, similar to their natural habitat)
- Water Hardness: Soft water is preferred, with hardness between 1-10 dGH.
- Diet:
- Omnivorous: They will accept a variety of small foods, such as crushed flakes, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods like baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and microworms. A balanced diet with occasional live food helps maintain their health and vibrant color.
- Tank Setup:
- Planted Tanks: Strawberry Rasboras thrive in heavily planted tanks that offer plenty of hiding places. The plants also help recreate their natural environment.
- Subdued Lighting: These fish appreciate lower lighting, which enhances their colors and helps them feel secure.
- Water Flow: Gentle water flow is best, as they are small and can be overwhelmed by strong currents.
- Dark Substrate: Using darker substrates can help their red coloration stand out beautifully.
- Breeding:
- Like other rasboras, Strawberry Rasboras are egg scatterers. In a well-maintained tank with optimal conditions, they may spawn, but the eggs and fry can be eaten by the adults unless separated.
Compatibility:
- Best Tank Mates: Due to their small size and gentle nature, Strawberry Rasboras should be kept with similarly sized, peaceful fish. Ideal tank mates include Chili Rasboras, Pygmy Corydoras, and Ember Tetras. Avoid keeping them with larger or aggressive fish, as they can easily be intimidated or become prey.
Ideal for Nano Aquariums:
The Strawberry Rasbora is perfect for aquascaped tanks where its red hues contrast beautifully with lush green plants. Their peaceful nature and low-maintenance care make them suitable for beginners and experienced aquarists alike.
By providing the right environment and water conditions, these fish will flourish and become a vibrant, captivating addition to any planted aquarium!
