The Japanese Rice Fish – Mega Orange (Oryzias latipes) is a colorful variety of the classic Medaka (Japanese rice fish) — prized for its vivid orange hue, peaceful nature, and ability to thrive in a wide range of conditions.


Tank Setup

  • Tank size: Minimum 10–15 liters (3–5 gallons) for a small group (5–6 fish).

  • Shape: Long, shallow tanks mimic their natural rice paddy habitat.

  • Substrate: Fine gravel or sand.

  • Decor: Add plants (like hornwort, anubias, or java moss), rocks, and driftwood for cover.

  • Feed 2–3 times daily in small amounts.


Behavior & Tankmates

  • Peaceful and social — best kept in groups of 6 or more.

  • Suitable tankmates:

    • Small, non-aggressive fish (e.g., guppies, white cloud minnows)

    • Shrimp or snails

  • Avoid fin-nippers or aggressive fish.


Breeding

  • Very easy to breed!

  • Females carry eggs attached to their belly before depositing them on plants or spawning mops.

  • Eggs hatch in 7–10 days depending on temperature.

  • Fry can be fed infusoria or powdered fry food, then baby brine shrimp.
