Greater duckweed is a floating plant which is seen in ponds, lakes, marshes, river backwaters, and slow-moving currents.physiologically and morphologically they are different from terrestrial plants. Spirodela polyrhiza is a single thallus plant with floating leaves. They are smaller and fast growing type. They prefers fresh water and the ph range is between 6 to 8. Eventhough they grow in medium lighting conditions, high intensity light fasten up their growth.small amount of nitrogen as well as carbon-dioxide enhances its growth.
Spirodela polyrhiza normally has 2 or 3 rounded leaves connecting each other.Their leaves are green in color but the undersurface is usually red.They have several leaves also hanging below its leaves. small fishes hide under the leaves of duckweed since it form a dense carpet covering on the surface. They can be used for the removal of contaminants from wastewater.
