Description
The Pygmy Corydora (Corydoras pygmaeus) is a delightful species of freshwater fish belonging to the Corydoradinae subfamily. Here’s an overview:
Size: 1.5 cm
Description:
- Appearance: Slender, with a silver body and a horizontal black stripe running from the snout through the tail, accompanied by a translucent dorsal fin.
- Behavior: Peaceful and social, they prefer to live in groups of 6 or more and often exhibit shoaling behavior.
Habitat:
- Natural Range: Found in slow-moving rivers and streams in South America, primarily in the Rio Madeira basin.
- Tank Conditions:
- Size: Minimum 10 gallons (38 liters) for a small group.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72-79°F (22-26°C)
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- Soft to moderately hard water.
- Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel to prevent damage to their barbels.
Diet:
- Omnivorous; they enjoy a mix of:
- High-quality sinking pellets or wafers.
- Live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, or micro worms.
- Occasional blanched vegetables or algae wafers.
Behavior in the Tank:
- Unlike other Corydoras species that stay primarily at the bottom, Pygmy Corydoras often swim in the middle levels of the tank, making them an active and unique presence.
- Their peaceful nature makes them excellent community fish, compatible with similarly sized, non-aggressive species like tetras or rasboras.
Breeding:
- Breeding in captivity is possible. A well-maintained tank with slightly cooler water and good feeding conditions often triggers spawning.
- Eggs are usually laid on plant leaves or tank walls and hatch in 3-5 days.
Special Considerations:
- Keep their water pristine, as poor water quality can affect their health.
- Provide plenty of hiding spots using plants, driftwood, or caves to make them feel secure.
