The Crystal Black Shrimp (Caridina cf. cantonensis “Crystal Black”) is a popular freshwater aquarium shrimp known for its striking black coloration and transparent patches. These shrimp belong to the Caridina genus and are selectively bred for their unique appearance. Here are some key characteristics and care tips for Crystal Black Shrimp:

  1. Coloration: Crystal Black Shrimp have a solid black color with varying degrees of opacity, giving them a crystal-like appearance. The transparency allows you to see internal organs and eggs in females.
  2. Size: Adult Crystal Black Shrimp typically reach a size of around 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 3.8 cm).
  3. Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 64-78°F (18-25°C)
    • pH: 6.2-7.8
    • Hardness: Soft to medium-hard water is preferred (GH 4-6, KH 0-4)
  4. Tank Setup:
    • Provide hiding places like moss, driftwood, or other decorations.
    • Use a fine substrate like sand to allow them to forage.
    • Maintain good water quality, as Crystal Black Shrimp are sensitive to changes in water parameters.
  5. Diet:
    • Feed a balanced diet, including high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables.
    • They also benefit from biofilm and microorganisms present in a well-established tank.
  6. Breeding:
    • Crystal Black Shrimp breed readily in a suitable environment.
    • Female shrimp carry eggs under their abdomen until they hatch into miniature versions of the adults.
  7. Compatibility:
    • Keep Crystal Black Shrimp in a dedicated shrimp tank, as they may be preyed upon by larger fish.
    • They can be kept with other peaceful aquarium inhabitants, such as small community fish.
  8. Water Changes:
    • Perform regular water changes to maintain water quality and remove any accumulated waste.
  9. Acclimation:
    • When introducing new shrimp to your tank, acclimate them slowly to prevent stress.
  10. Disease Prevention:
    • Crystal Black Shrimp are generally hardy, but proper care and water conditions are crucial to prevent stress and disease.
