Description

Note: In an emersed state, this plant will be in green color, and once submerged, it will turn a purplish color. The color of the submersed plant is highly dependent on the light used in the aquarium. It is noted that the color of this plant changes from light to light, and is based on the amount of carbon dioxide injection. Therefore we recommend you use better aquarium accessories for optimal results.

Bacopa salzmannii purple

Bacopa Salzmannii is also known as Araguaia Bacopa or Purple Bacopa. In submerged form, this attractive Bacopa species can create a distinctive colour range from pink to purple. At Aquarium Plants Factory, we raised this species in our greenhouse so that it would be easily available for commercial trade, increasing the plants’ popularity and making them available to everyone. The leaf will be green and resemble the well-known Bacopa Caroliniana when it is growing above water. The ideal submerged environment will gradually cause the leaf to change into a gorgeous colour. For this gorgeous aquatic plant, it is advised to set up a high-tech aquarium with plenty of CO2, micro, and macronutrients.

Bacopa salzmannii originates from Central and South America where it can be found on marsh land and the edges of rivers and ponds. It is smaller sized (about half the size) compared to Bacopa caroliniana and it comes in a couple of varietals. Depending on the exact varietal, color can range from Green – with a tinge of purple to fully deep purple. The fully purple varietal is gaining popularity in the hobby in recent days, though it is still only traded among a small number of hobbyists and not commercially propagated in scale by farms. The greenish varietal that carries a tinge of purple is common and has been in the hobby a long time.

The darker purple variety is next to the more popular greenish variety. When grown in identical settings and seen in identical lighting, the difference can be rather pronounced. They virtually resemble certain flora. Under bright light and coloured lighting, the more greenish varieties’ leaves can turn fairly purple. However, even under less favourable growth conditions, the purple variety will still appear entirely purplish.

Both the red and the green plants stand out well against the purple variant. It is a relatively tough plant, in spite of its fantastic colouring. It has a bolder purple tone, even down to its stems, thanks to stronger illumination, CO2 injection, and adequate fertilisation all around. In the middle, it thrives.

Bacopa salzmannii appears to prefer milder water as opposed to Bacopa caroliniana, which is not particular about water hardness. Bacopa caroliniana has identical pruning and propagation requirements.

Key Success Factors

Plant in well lit area

Overall tank stability avoids algae issues

CO2 injection should be used for more optimal coloration

All round fertilization and higher light levels give brighter coloration (deeply curled leaves can hint at fertilization issues)

Not too alkaline water (<10dKH)
Pruning and propagation
Similar to Bacopa caroliniana, cut above an internode and plant the top 2 – 3 inch portion of the plant. This plant also develops side shoots naturally over time.
