The Smokey Paraiba Angelfish is an exquisite variety of freshwater angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), known for combining the dramatic “smokey” pattern with the iridescent blue highlights of the Paraiba lineage. This stunning fish is a result of selective breeding and is highly sought after by enthusiasts for its unique appearance.

Key Characteristics:

  • Appearance:
    • Smokey Pattern: The “smokey” trait results in a gradient or patchy dark coloration on the body, typically concentrated near the dorsal and rear areas. This creates a shadowy, mysterious effect.
    • Paraiba Blue: The addition of the Paraiba gene enhances the angelfish with a metallic or iridescent blue sheen, which becomes more prominent under proper lighting.
    • Fins: Flowing, translucent fins with hints of blue or gray tones, adding to their elegance.
  • Size: Can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in body height and 8 inches (20 cm) in total height, including fins.
  • Lifespan: 8–10 years with good care.
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show territorial behavior during breeding or in cramped tanks.

Habitat and Care:

  • Tank Size:
    • A minimum of 30 gallons for a pair, with larger tanks (55 gallons or more) recommended for groups or community setups.
  • Water Conditions:
    • Temperature: 78–84°F (25–29°C).
    • pH: 6.0–7.5.
    • Hardness: 3–10 dGH.
  • Diet:
    • Omnivorous. A varied diet will keep them healthy and enhance their coloration:
      • High-quality flakes or pellets.
      • Frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia.
      • Occasional blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Mimic their natural habitat with tall plants (like Amazon swords or Vallisneria) and driftwood.
    • Provide open swimming areas along with hiding spots.
    • Use subdued lighting or lighting that enhances the metallic sheen to make their colors pop.

Special Features of the Smokey Paraiba:

  • Lighting Effects:
    • Their Paraiba iridescence appears most vibrant under LED or full-spectrum lighting. The smokey pattern creates a stunning contrast against their shimmering blue tones.
  • Lineage:
    • The smokey pattern and Paraiba trait are the result of specific genetic pairings. Breeders often focus on maintaining the quality and intensity of these traits when developing this strain.
  • Behavior:
    • Like other angelfish, Smokey Paraibas are cichlids and may display mild aggression, especially during breeding. Keeping them in a group of at least 5–6 in a large tank can help spread any territorial tendencies.

Breeding Smokey Paraiba Angelfish:

  • Pairing: Allow a group to grow together and form natural pairs. Smokey Paraibas may inherit their traits variably depending on the genetic makeup of the parents.
  • Breeding Setup:
    • A separate breeding tank with a temperature of 80°F (27°C) and slightly acidic water (pH ~6.5) is ideal.
    • Provide a flat surface for egg-laying, such as a slate or broad plant leaf.
  • Egg and Fry Care:
    • Parents often tend to the eggs, but if they eat them, you can move the eggs to a separate tank with an air stone to prevent fungal growth.
    • Feed the fry with infusoria or liquid fry food initially, progressing to baby brine shrimp as they grow.

Tankmates:

Choose peaceful or moderately active fish that won’t stress the angelfish or compete aggressively for food. Good options include:

  • Cardinal or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Corydoras catfish.
  • Gouramis (non-aggressive species).
  • Peaceful plecos like the Bristlenose Pleco.
