Description

Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Brown’ is a classic and beloved aquarium plant—perfect for beginners and pros alike. It’s one of the most reliable, low-maintenance midground plants, and its earthy tones give aquascapes a natural, grounded look.

🌿 Quick Facts

  • Scientific Name: Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Brown’

  • Family: Araceae

  • Origin: Sri Lanka

  • Growth Type: Rosette-forming

  • Height: ~10–15 cm (can vary depending on tank conditions)

  • Color: Bronze to deep brown, with some reddish hues

🧡 What Makes It Special

  • Its brown-bronze ruffled leaves create depth and a warm tone in the aquascape.

  • Extremely adaptable to different water parameters.

  • Does well in low light, no CO₂ required—perfect for low-tech tanks.

  • Looks very natural in biotope-style or jungle-style aquascapes.

🌱 Care Guide

💡 Light

  • Tolerates low to medium light.

  • Higher light will produce more compact growth and potentially richer color, but it doesn’t demand it.

💧 CO₂ & Fertilization

  • No CO₂ needed, but will grow faster and slightly more robust with it.

  • Benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate. Occasional root tabs help, especially in inert gravel or sand.

  • Minimal water column dosing is fine unless paired with faster growers.

🌊 Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 20–28°C (68–82°F)

  • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • Hardness: Very tolerant of a wide range

🔁 Growth & Propagation

  • Grows slowly but steadily.

  • Propagates by sending out runners—will naturally form dense clumps over time.

  • Occasional pruning of outer or melting leaves helps keep it tidy.

  • When moved to a new tank or changed conditions, Cryptocoryne species can melt—leaves turn mushy and disintegrate.

  • It’s normal! The roots usually stay healthy and will regrow new, adapted leaves.

🎨 Aquascaping Tips

  • Use in the midground or sides of the foreground.

  • Looks amazing paired with lighter green plants like Anubias nana, Hydrocotyle tripartita, or even carpeted Sagittaria subulata.

  • Can be part of a “crypt meadow” when combined with other C. wendtii varieties (green, tropica, red).
