The Blue Paraiba Angelfish is a captivating variety of freshwater angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), celebrated for its shimmering blue hues and graceful form. This strain is a product of careful selective breeding, with the “Paraiba” lineage denoting its vibrant iridescent qualities and specific genetic heritage.

Key Characteristics:

  • Appearance:
    • Body Coloration: A silvery-blue sheen across the body, often intensified under the right lighting. The “Paraiba” trait enhances the reflective, metallic quality of the scales.
    • Fins: Long, flowing fins typical of angelfish, often with blue highlights.
    • Markings: May feature faint vertical bars or be more uniformly colored, depending on lineage and breeding.
  • Size: Can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in body height and about 8 inches (20 cm) tall when including fins.
  • Lifespan: 8–10 years with proper care.
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful, though like most angelfish, they may become territorial during breeding or if kept in too small a group.

Care and Habitat:

  • Tank Size:
    • A minimum of 30 gallons for a pair or small group. For larger groups, a 55-gallon tank or bigger is recommended.
  • Water Conditions:
    • Temperature: 78–84°F (25–29°C).
    • pH: 6.0–7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (3–10 dGH).
  • Diet:
    • Omnivorous. Offer a varied diet to maintain health and enhance coloration:
      • High-quality flakes or pellets.
      • Frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia.
      • Blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach for added nutrients.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Provide vertical spaces with tall plants like Amazon swords or Vallisneria to mimic their natural habitat.
    • Include driftwood or rock formations for hiding and territory establishment.
    • Maintain low to moderate water flow, as they prefer calmer waters.

Lineage and Genetics:

  • Paraiba Trait:
    • The “Paraiba” trait refers to the genetic enhancement that creates the intense iridescent blue coloration.
    • Breeding for this trait involves selecting parents with strong iridescent characteristics. The trait can be dominant or recessive depending on the strain.
  • Lineage Importance:
    • Breeding angelfish from the Blue Paraiba line ensures offspring inherit the desirable coloration and metallic sheen.
    • Breeders often focus on maintaining lineage purity to preserve and enhance these traits.

Breeding Blue Paraiba Angelfish:

  • Pairing: Angelfish form monogamous pairs. Allow a group to mature together and let them naturally pair off.
  • Breeding Setup:
    • Use a breeding tank with a flat surface (like a slate or broad leaf) for egg-laying.
    • Keep water temperature around 80°F (27°C) and slightly acidic (pH ~6.5).
  • Egg Care:
    • Parents may guard the eggs, but some pairs might eat them. Remove the eggs to a separate tank if needed.
  • Fry Care:
    • Feed fry infusoria or liquid fry food, transitioning to baby brine shrimp as they grow.
