Apistogramma borellii, also known as the Umbrella Cichlid or Yellow Dwarf Cichlid, is a peaceful South American dwarf cichlid native to the slow-moving streams and wetlands of Paraguay, southern Brazil, and northern Argentina. It is one of the gentlest Apistogramma species, making it a great choice for planted community aquariums.

- Fine sand substrate for natural digging behavior
- Plenty of caves made from coconut shells, rocks, or driftwood
- Dense plants and leaf litter for cover
- Gentle filtration with low to moderate water flow
Diet
They are omnivores with a preference for protein-rich foods:
- High-quality micro pellets
- Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia
- Live foods such as mosquito larvae (occasionally)
- Fine flakes
Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily.
Tank Mates
Suitable companions include:
- Small tetras
- Rasboras
- Corydoras catfish
- Otocinclus
- Pencilfish
Avoid:
- Large aggressive cichlids
- Fin-nipping species
- Very active or boisterous fish
Breeding
- Cave spawner.
- Female lays 30–80 eggs inside a cave.
- Eggs hatch in 2–4 days.
- Fry become free-swimming after about 5–7 days.
- The female guards the fry while the male defends the territory.
