A Pearl Gourami pair is a popular choice for a peaceful aquarium—but there are a few important things to know before you buy.
Can you keep a Pearl Gourami pair?
Yes, but with conditions:
- Best combination: 1 male + 1 female
- Avoid 2 males (they may fight, especially during breeding)
- In some cases, even a pair can show mild aggression if the tank is small
Experts often recommend either:
- A single gourami, or
- A group (1 male + 2–3 females) for better balance
Ideal tank setup for a pair
- Minimum tank size: 30 gallons (120 liters)
- Temperature: 24–28°C
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Aquascape:
- Heavily planted tank 🌿
- Floating plants (important for bubble nests)
- Low water flow
Pearl gouramis are labyrinth fish, meaning they breathe air from the surface, so keep space above water clear.
Behaviour (very important)
- Generally peaceful and shy
- Males may become territorial during breeding
- Long fins → avoid fin-nipping fish
Male vs Female (how to choose a pair)
- Male:
- Brighter color (orange/red throat)
- Longer, pointed fins
- Female:
- Rounder body
- Less colorful
Good tank mates
- Tetras (neon, ember)
- Rasboras
- Corydoras
- Kuhli loaches
Avoid:
- Tiger barbs ❌
- Aggressive cichlids ❌
