Description

The Least Rasbora (Boraras urophthalmoides), also known as the Exclamation Point Rasbora due to the black spot on its body that resembles an exclamation mark, is a tiny and peaceful freshwater fish species popular among aquarium enthusiasts. Its small size and vibrant colors make it a favorite for nano tanks and planted aquariums.

Characteristics:

  • Size: One of the smallest rasboras, reaching only about 0.5 to 1 inch (1.2-2.5 cm) in length.
  • Color: Generally has a silvery-gold body with a prominent black horizontal line that ends in a larger black spot near the tail. This is complemented by subtle orange or reddish hues along the fins and body.
  • Lifespan: Typically, they live for around 3 to 5 years under proper care.

Behavior:

  • Schooling Fish: Least Rasboras are schooling fish and feel most comfortable in groups of at least 6 or more. Keeping them in a group allows them to display natural behaviors and reduces stress.
  • Temperament: They are peaceful and non-aggressive, making them great companions for other small, non-aggressive fish species.

Care Requirements:

  1. Tank Size:
    • Ideal for nano tanks, with a minimum tank size of 5 gallons, though larger tanks are always better, especially for a school of fish.
  2. Water Conditions:
    • Temperature: 68-82°F (20-28°C)
    • pH: 4.0-7.0 (They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water)
    • Hardness: Soft water is preferred, though they can adapt to a range of conditions.
  3. Diet:
    • Omnivorous: They accept a variety of foods, including high-quality micro-pellets, crushed flakes, and live or frozen foods like daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and microworms. A varied diet helps maintain their health and colors.
  4. Tank Setup:
    • Planted Tanks: Least Rasboras thrive in densely planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spots. The plants help mimic their natural environment and make them feel more secure.
    • Low Flow: Gentle water flow is ideal, as they are small and can be overwhelmed by strong currents.
    • Substrate: A dark substrate can help enhance their colors, making them stand out in the aquarium.
  5. Breeding:
    • Least Rasboras are egg scatterers, meaning they lay their eggs freely among plants. With optimal conditions, they may breed in the tank without much intervention. However, the parents may eat the eggs if not separated.

Compatibility:

  • Best Tank Mates: Due to their small size, they should be kept with other tiny, peaceful species such as Chili Rasboras, Ember Tetras, and Pygmy Corydoras. Avoid larger or aggressive fish that may view them as food.

The Least Rasbora is a charming, low-maintenance species that adds liveliness and color to small aquariums. Their small size and peaceful nature make them ideal for community nano tanks, and their minimal care requirements make them suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists alike.
