The Apistogramma Agassizii “Double Red” is a popular variety of dwarf cichlid known for its vibrant colors and engaging behavior. Here’s some information about this beautiful fish:

Appearance

  • Coloration: The “Double Red” variant is known for its striking red coloration, especially on the dorsal and caudal fins. Males exhibit more vibrant and extensive red markings compared to females.
  • Size: Males can grow up to 3.5 inches (9 cm), while females are typically smaller, reaching about 2.5 inches (6 cm).

Habitat and Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a pair, but larger tanks are preferred to accommodate their territorial nature.
  • Water Parameters: They thrive in soft, acidic water with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0 and a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C).
  • Aquascaping: They prefer tanks with plenty of hiding places, such as caves, plants, and driftwood. A sandy substrate is ideal as they enjoy digging.

Behavior and Compatibility

  • Temperament: Apistogramma Agassizii are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially males. It’s best to keep one male with multiple females to reduce aggression.
  • Tank Mates: They can be kept with other peaceful fish that occupy different levels of the tank, such as small tetras, rasboras, and bottom-dwellers like Corydoras. Avoid larger or more aggressive species.

Diet

  • Feeding: They are omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods. A balanced diet includes high-quality flake or pellet food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.

Breeding

  • Breeding Setup: To breed them, provide a dedicated breeding tank with soft, acidic water and plenty of caves. Females lay eggs in secluded spots, and males guard the territory.
  • Fry Care: Once the eggs hatch, the fry can be fed with infusoria or commercially available fry food until they are large enough to accept baby brine shrimp.

Care Tips

  • Water Quality: Regular water changes and maintaining stable water parameters are crucial for their health.
  • Observation: Monitor for any signs of disease or stress, and ensure they are not being bullied by tank mates.

Apistogramma Agassizii “Double Red” can be a stunning addition to a well-maintained aquarium, providing both visual appeal and interesting behavior for aquarists.
