The Axelrodi Rasbora (Sundadanio axelrodi), also known as the blue or neon blue rasbora, is a small, colorful freshwater fish popular among aquarists for its vibrant colors and peaceful nature. Originally from Borneo, these tiny fish bring a burst of color to community tanks and are especially favored in nano aquariums.
Key Characteristics:
- Appearance: Axelrodi rasboras have slender bodies with striking iridescent colors, ranging from electric blue to neon green or orange-red, depending on the variety. Males are typically more brightly colored, especially during breeding periods.
- Size: They are small fish, usually reaching about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length, making them ideal for nano tanks.
- Lifespan: With proper care, they live around 3-5 years in captivity.
Behavior and Temperament:
- Peaceful Nature: Axelrodi rasboras are social and calm, making them ideal for peaceful community tanks.
- Schooling Fish: They thrive in schools of at least 6-8 fish, where they feel secure and display more vibrant colors and natural behavior. In small groups, they may become shy or stressed.
Care Requirements:
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 10 gallons (38 liters) is recommended for a small group. While they can fit in smaller tanks, they need swimming space to school.
- Water Conditions: They come from soft, slightly acidic waters. Ideal water parameters include a pH of 5.0-7.0, temperatures of 72-79°F (22-26°C), and low hardness. Clean, well-maintained water is essential, as they are sensitive to changes in water quality.
- Diet: Axelrodi rasboras are omnivorous and can be fed a varied diet of high-quality micro-pellets, flake food, and live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, or micro-worms. Smaller foods are preferable given their tiny mouths.
- Tank Setup: A densely planted tank with plenty of hiding spots and dim lighting enhances their color and makes them feel secure. They enjoy shaded areas created by floating plants.
Compatibility:
- Tank Mates: These rasboras are compatible with other small, peaceful fish like dwarf corydoras, neon tetras, small rasboras, and shrimps. Avoid housing them with larger or aggressive species that might intimidate or outcompete them for food.
Breeding:
Axelrodi rasboras are egg-scatterers and will breed in a well-maintained tank with ample hiding spots. Setting up a separate breeding tank with a mesh or spawning mop at the bottom can help protect the eggs. Males display brighter colors to attract females during the breeding process. After spawning, the parents should be removed to prevent them from eating the eggs.
The Axelrodi rasbora is a delightful choice for aquarists looking to add a splash of color to a peaceful, small aquarium. Their hardiness, stunning colors, and compatibility make them a popular choice for beginners and experienced fishkeepers alike.
